Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
Explain the principles of approximation and interpolation, distinguish between local and global formulations of mathematical models, and describe the fundamentals of the finite difference method and the finite element method (FEM).
Explain the modelling assumptions underlying FEM analysis of bar and beam structures, plane stress and strain, the bending of plates and shells.
Define computational models for structural analysis, including geometry, material properties, loads, boundary conditions and discretisation, and select appropriate analytical or numerical solution methods.
Use FEM software to perform basic structural analyses and consult relevant technical documentation and information sources to support modelling decisions.
Plan and perform numerical calculations, interpret the results, and critically assess their physical consistency and sensitivity to modelling assumptions and mesh refinement.
Demonstrate responsibility for the accuracy and reliability of computational results and their interpretation, recognise the limitations of their own knowledge and skills, and identify further learning needs.

Software used in laboratory classes: MATLAB with CALFEM package, Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis.
Installation and configuration details for some of these applications are available on the course website.
